From limb to limb I climb in within The heart of the laurel tree, Where art thou, my maiden fair, Where can sweet Daphne be? I climb higher branch to branch, Within tree’s canopy, But I find not of whom I seek, Within the laurel tree. Daphne dear where do thee hide? Do not thee hear my call? As I reach the highest limb, Of laurel tree so tall. I feel you near, my Daphne dear, What hath thy father done? The object of my heart’s desire, And laurel tree are one. I cut thy twigs with leaves of green, And form them in a wreath, A symbol of a sacred love, I e’er to thee bequeath. |
