returning to visit
old friends
is always a thrill
but I did wonder
"what's the point?"
as my thai remains deplorable

true enough,
the villagers and I
could say nothing much
beyond
the obligatory exchange of
"Sabai dee mai?"

yet,
so much
warmth and sincerity
charged the air
that a glorious
tingle of realization
overwhelmed me

sometimes,
the key to human relations
lies in communicating
the deceptively dismissive filler
of "Are you fine?"
It's all one needs to ask and know

Sometimes, because the question goes unasked,
no one is there to listen to an offered answer. You, my friend, seem to always be there, to ask, and to listen. It's a wonderful character trait, which I admire.

It's all in the "warmth and sincerity" of the people concerned.  I love your poem and I love that you have singled out such a "deceptively dismissive filler" as the subject of your poem.
