Last Days The cloud came while the city was still. It arrived with thunderous claps; awakened sleeping fears. Something akin to rain came. It fell in syrupy rivulets, coagulating in gutters. Sticky drops stained buildings and cars in molasses splatter-patterns. ------------------------------- Day is dark. A few of us left the house to search for survivors and supplies. The air was thick: sickly sour. A silvery stench slicked our lips, coated tongues. We vowed to stay inside, Windows have been taped, towels stuffed around door jams. ------------------------------------------------- Our appetites have withered. There isn’t much to eat, anyway. We’ve thrown out all but the canned food. ------------------------------------------------- We went out again for water and food. We saw bodies lying in the street; found a neighbor couple shot to death. With masked faces, we raided houses up and down the block. p.s. My face and hands are covered in sores. We are all getting them. -------------------------------------------------- We are dying one by one. Today, we lost old Jimmy. He said it was okay because he already had cancer. The drinking water is gone. ------------------------------------------------- We killed for water and couldn’t afford to cry. This was originally posted back in 2003. With yesterday's tragedy in London, I felt the need to re-visit it. I apologize if it's too dark for some readers. |

This reminds me of the futuristic movies from the 50's and 60's...and is timely in the day's tragedies. THIS, is how it could be. WE are the ones who need to change it. Somehow. Thank you... |

Such sorrow. It reminds me of 911 so if it was written for that, you did well to describe. I could see what you were writing like a movie in my mind. Bless you for your heart to write about those who are in such great need. If you are, then God bless you too. Jesus lives in my heart! He can in yours too!!! |

I have had similar dreams, Corinne. I could well imagine; your writing says it all. ![]() |
