Death is walking by your side; I see it borrows dignity from you while cooling fires of life still shimmer without make believe through the cold translucent sheen that grows within your skin; I see its shadows move within you; when did this end game begin? I don’t recall you saying, “OK, today I’ll start to die. The rest of you just carry on so you’ll all be good to go right after I am really gone.” I’m told, “Don’t mention that she’s dying.” (As if she really doesn’t know, as if her eyes don’t scream it at me while she casts a rigid smile and turns her glittered eyes away.) As if she’s not allowed to say, “I know it’s soon but not today; I’m still alive and don’t need tears even though I look this way; I still know beauty in my memories, I still recall all the songs I sung when I was young and counted life in years.” ©2005 by icebox |

A very sad piece, icebox, more, in my opinion, because of the lying than the dying. If we can't be honest and open with each other at that particular time, what hope is there for the human race? I do like your writing! |

You have it right icebox. We should be allowed to speak of dying to those who know and may indeed wish to speak about it...Did just that recently with an old time friend. So far she's living as hard as she can.. With respect for all you write, martyjo |

quote: You have spoken from her heart and touched mine deeply. Sadly beautiful. Yes, dying seems tabu in our society. Love, Margherita |

Once again, thoughts of my father... and you have spoken it more eloquently, and more passionately than I could have ever hoped. http://www.mysticwicks.com |

"....and counted life in years" hard to swallow...wish I could give you the first response I had in my head as I finished reading... In another life...I was there. "too bad ignorance isn't painful" |

I believe, dying is simply another part of life, which we open a door to and walk through...hugs for this bittersweet right/write. |
