Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2005-08-26 12:27 PM

Soon, would be the best time to visit
By winter, I’ll have left, packed up
Abandoned the shack
Gone back to the city

So, you should come, if you’ve a mind to
Before the woodstove becomes lonely
You really should travel by water
Taking the river above Buckeystown dam

An easy float between the large rocks
An apparent family of great granite hippos
Then, an attentive moment through the millrace
There’s a thrill there, and a spill for the careless

Now, you can make a day of it, no way to get lost
Let the river guide you, he knows the way
Ask him to take you under the willows
Where once, I saw Ophelia floating

Take your lunch at a sandy stretch, just opposite
A sheer rock wall and a slow green pool
An eagle lives nearby, but he’s a curmudgeon
And will, no doubt, pretend he’s not home

If the day is mild, sit with a book under the maples
Let daylilies and bluebells read over your shoulder
They seldom get the chance and are usually grateful
Though their memory, like their season is short

Soon you’ll see brick staircases leading from the bank
To homes no longer there, taken by a long ago flood
They’re still visible, if you look closely
Faint outlines against the treeline

I’ll meet you at the landing below Lilypons bridge
The resident heron will announce your arrival
I’ll welcome you with a glass and a smile
And together, we’ll hear the owls tell their stories

With a nod to A.R.Ammons

Ed

What a joy it would be to do those things, if I only had a boat!  You managed to create a beautiful scene in your invitation...very unique way to do it, too.  Enjoyed!

Thank you for the tour my friend, although your love for the place has long been transparent to anyone with ears to hear,

it was very lovely to spend a day of grace with you...at what will always be YOUR place.

Ed...Why would anyone want too leave such a beautiful tranquil place as you have written of. I could come visit, but I'm afraid I would stay forever.
Thanks for the vivid pictures of paradise it this wonderful poem...Paul

and so many times I have seen this and pictured it in my head, yet never have I traveled such a beautifully lonesome path with you.  I despise that you had to write this, but will be happy to see you in comfort.

inspired you a great deal my friend

you make it a shame to leave...
perhaps you should write one
for the other side

lest your mind grow too anguished at the leaving

something about
cold
and wood
and cold
and hungry woodstoves
and

cold

excellent ed

you just painted with words a panaramic of paradise...and my idea of heaven...
there is magic between the river and the trees...
and how cool is this analogy...

I'll bare the brunt of your long buried pain

such a peaceful scene, one that would be nearly impossible to walk away from...

Well, I'd probably take I-70 but only because one of my oars is in the shop for a tune up...
Yanno, Ed, you make that "shack" sound more like a natural refuge to me.  Wouldn't take me much encouragement to hole up in there for the winter but then I guess it would make going out for coffee and cigarettes kinda tricky on those damn snow days we get around these parts, huh???

Bittersweet leaving that place I am sure Ed, but don't forget I have talked with the "Winterized Yeti" and trust me it ain't a purty.  Remember, frozen toes, and fingers, blankies galore?  Oh but if it had a heating system, right?

If those walls of the shack could talk I can't even imagine the winter thoughts of yours that they would speak.  However, I do love these summer and fall ones.

This sucks if you are really leaving there? I even watch that river of yours all the time.  Somehow you and that river just seem to belong together, at least in my mind.

If you are going for the winter, are you going back in the spring?

Oh...sorry, this was a beautiful picture, and I did honestly take the journey to the shack in my mind with it, honest!

A wise man
spoke to me.

His voice
spiraled
from crescent spike
stapled to velvet, obsidian.

While thunder, volcanic -
rose from my belly
to ascend my throat.

My own speech, possessed.

He placed me on a river.

I carelessly plodded my way,
while he stood,
fierce upon the bank.

Making sure I never fell.

I did fall.
Spouting unsubstantial claims
regarding happiness and comfort.

He did not complain.
Rather listened, and smiled.

Never in constant worry
of the next rain,
the forecast, a snowfall.

To me.

And if I happened to mention
anything
he would brush me away.

His hand, flippant to the air.

Me, wishing I could just keep him warm.
