Cowboy's a verb, but also a noun.
A shame, and it's sad, but it's true.
A cowboy at heart, is shore what I am-
But, alas, that is not what I do.

I know several punchers, at home on the range-
But these days, restricted to trucks.
Who much rather live in those young, wilder days,
And mounting some pony that bucks.

A long time ago, with the wind on my face-
I lived just to do what I pleased,
The sun baking down, and tanning my skin.
As free as a sky full of geese.

Marriage put hobbles and shackles on me-
But I didn't stop, nosirree!
It was kids that corraled me, and cut off my wind...
And this is the reason, you see?

When I was still single, who gave a dang-
If I had a dollar or not?
Though money came hard, it was easily spent.
Or vanished in some poker pot.

Then when I was married, my wife's teeth were bad-
She cried with the pain late at night.
And dentists cost money, which I didn't have-
My heart told me, "this isn't right."

When the baby was sick, and my wife going crazy-
I asked myself what I could do?
And finally determined, that I'd light a shuck,
And told the boss that I was through.

It didn't take long, but it was a surprise-
That everything paid better dough,
That I had been making out there punchin' cows,
Prosperity's what brought me low.

But as I grow older, evaluate things-
This is the truth that I've found...
Cowboy, the trade, might be a verb.
But "Cowboy", the man, is a noun."
