Pocketed {for Father’s Day} Never without, for even the oldest of them were snapped easily, sometimes with comical flourish and not just for his nose, either, but the handkerchiefs, great and large, colorful or white, were a common prop of daily need, in all ways. You see, it wasn’t always he who needed them. Those masterful hands, with cotton linen or plain old cotton cloth could take a handkerchief, with ease, to dry a tear or blot and stop a bleeding cut, could nestle a fallen bird, dry the sweat of a long-gone day, or make a pad between skin and heat, to pick up a coffee pot on camping trips, handle the good end of a frying pan, or wrap up a “let’s keep this” rock. He must have pocketed two, or three, as one was kept for allergies, the other two for needful things ~ a temporary bandage for those broken wings, a scarf in jest, a cowboy’s collar around the neck, a gathering basket for wild sweet grapes, and pinned just right, a little one’s cape… a magical toy on invisible string, he made them that, and all those things. So don’t chide me as I wash and dry, and gently fold all these memories that were handed down, in handkerchiefs that I pocket around. ~*~ For all of those Dads who blow their noses, This ‘kerchief’s for you and is full of roses. |

What beautiful memories you have painted for us through your words. The imagery in this piece brought it to life ![]() Ruth |
