“Don’t sketch what you know,” he said to me, “draw instead, what you see.”

                                         brain waves misdirection

symmetry is lost in turned cheek

“Don’t think with your head,” to me she said, “ instinctively use your gut instead

Thanks, T.A.  I've recently begun drawing again, finding it's a challenge to fight that old brain of mine!  It's established it's own perspective as to how to draw things, and now I have to turn the object inside out to rethink the perspective from which it's really seen!   Not easy for me!

Again, thanks for reading and responding.

But....what if the things I see make me want to give up all art forever? What shall I draw then?

Midnitesun,

It's great to see you again, and yes, I agree.  The best art comes from the heart.  Thanks for dropping by...

Ratleader,

  ?  !  ?  !

'But....what if the things I see make me want to give up all art forever? What shall I draw then?'   Paint emotion, if not realism.  Then, the other will follow.  Sometimes we just have to flush the oil out of the engine.

Personally, Ed, I don't think one has the choice to give up art because its basis is innate.  It is the way we express what we perceive, whether it be pleasant or displeasing.  We have the choice in what medium we decide to use, for instance, charcoal, watercolor, words, or simply unspoken thought.  Even if unspoken, the art is only dormant until it can excape.  Art IS
PERCEPTION.  How does one refuse to excape our five or six senses?  In other words, my good friend, it's there whether you want to pursue it or not!  After I have seen one of your paintings and hundreds of your poems, I'd say that it wants to surface!
     Ed, drop me an e-mail.

Yeah, I guess you're right....I'm stuck with it for good or ill. Still, sometimes I just get so goddam dejected I want to quit -- all of it, never ever paint -- or write -- again. I guess you'll know what I mean, it's not the art itself but what seems to come to me inescapably along with it, that turns me away.

But it's in my blood now, and I guess it always will be. No point even thinking about quitting, because I know I won't....though I may not be posting my work at this site for a while. Whether I do or not (and I honestly don't know right now), I'll be here reading and perhaps dropping in comments on quality poems like this one.

As I'm sure you could tell, this poem ~really~ hit me. Sometimes one brings you into focus quite unexpectedly, and it sure did.

Thanks for your kind words here....and your kindness in every way.

Now, back to the (alas, blank) drawing-board(S)......

Ratleader,

I'm glad this poem was meaningful to you.  I almost didn't post it because I thought it lacked emotion, but the riddling part of me got the best of me, and I decided to post it afterall.  (Incidently, the form was inspired by your creative formatting, and one of suthern's latest poems!)  Now, dare you leave us when you know what an inspiration you are?  (Well, I understand we all may need a time out now and then.  For instance, I've had to set limits on the computer due to busy schedule, but hope to be on more in July.)

I'll be looking forward to your occasional drop-ins at Piptalk.  Taek care, Ratleader.
If you do take a break, I'm sure you will be missed!

         your friend,

I've never been able to even draw a straight line... and don't even color within the lines well. *S* So thinking of myself as an artist was an alien concept... until an artist I respect beyond words reminded me that art comes in many forms...

All that is a long-winded way of saying that your poem AND your wonderful responses have touched me deeply... thank you!!

Cathy - you do Ohio proud with such wondeful poems - I am not sure what I see half whole or nothing - if measured by my ability to draw it then I see muddled and misshapen and unidentifiable - I enjoy what I see but the connection between eye brain heart and hand has never been good...love your poems - Paul
