I pondered my problems upon my sullen list Then toss it to trash and go off to fish, Following the river to find a likely pool, My rod and reel I must have forgot And though the sun is blazing hot The water was quite a delight and cool. I uncorked a bottle of chilled wine Which in my cellar I did find Along with bread and cheese to sate Any hunger that might bother, With just line, sinker and bobber, I preferred to fish without bait. The clouds didn’t crowd the summer blue sky, And a gentle breeze makes castles and angel wings fly, I hide as I must in the shade of a willow tree That sways and plays with the birds That sings sweets songs the pool has often heard, And though so old again seems now new to me. I gentle drift to doze and dreaming Wake to make sense of a fish screaming From the cool pool before me on firmer side, “On kind mister I long for taste of your cheese won’t you find a hook to bait me please?” I said nothing as I attempted to decide. “My good fish” I soon said from the pool side “It seems to me to be a case of suicide To wish to linger upon a hook which I have not For no catch do I need to feed me today So I suggest you be on your way And thoughts of hooks should soon be forgot.” I broke a small piece of cheese And tossed it to him for he did say please, Then sipped a bit and closed my eyes. To drift to sleepless dreaming As sunlight was brightly beaming And the wind was the gentlest of sighs. When musing broke and daydreaming over A sly fox was talking to me from the clover, “Pardon me oh sleeper might I share your bread?” Yes I know foxes are not known for manners fine So I pondered his words with a sip of wine, So calm and clear was the with words he said. But without much further thought Broke some bread which I had brought And offered it to the fox with so much grace Who nibbled it carefully till all gone Then listened a bit with me to the song Before casually strolling from that place. Just as my lids were to close once more I spied a skunk upon the other shore, Which luckily was where went the breeze, First there was the one then two others Probably a mother and children brothers Just wandering where they please. I pulled in my fishing line, sinker and bobber Left the bread and tossed the cheese in the water, Grabbed the now empty bottle of wine To return to the city where I had come For now was the time of falling sun And I had a gray shadow to find. Glad the skumks were on the other side! What I like about your writing is that satin flow-everything is polished from word choice, rhythm, to layering. It is very relaxing to read. Wish you'd post more! miscellanea |

"I broke a small piece of cheese And tossed it to him for he did say please, Then sipped a bit and closed my eyes. To drift to sleepless dreaming As sunlight was brightly beaming And the wind was the gentlest of sighs." MY kind of fishing! Loved this one, as it took me straight into relaxation mode. thanks! |
