Artist: Linda L. Dowd

Peggy's Cove Lament
~ Linda L. Dowd ~

The fishermen of Peggy’s Cove,
They sailed the ocean blue,
Pulling in their nets of fish,
Cod, sole and flounder too.

Though their work was heavy,
They didn't seem to care,
Singing old sea shanties
As they breathed the salty air.

"Heave ho, out we go
With the morning tide,
To face another day at sea,
The groom and his bride."

Then suddenly the sky grew dark
And a gusty gale blew,
The churning ocean sank their ship
And she lost all her crew.

The wailing sobs of families
Could be heard along the shore,
The sea had claimed a victory
And they'd see their men no more.

For years the men had braved the sea,
~ It was their way of life,
To be at one with the mighty brine,
Laments each mournful wife.

The sons of sons now harvest the sea,
As their fathers did before,
Singing the songs of fishermen,
'Twas thus and ever more.

"Heave ho, out we go,
With the morning tide,
To face another day at sea,
The groom and his bride."

Please Note: The captain is often referred
to as the groom and the boat as his bride.

Good morning, Donna!

Thank you! Those are some of the lyrics of a sea shanty that I wrote. The piece also has many instrumental passages that I wrote for the guitar.

May the sun shine down on your day!

P.S. The captain is often referred to as the groom and the boat as his bride.

Startime ~

I have wonderful memories of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, as well. It has been many years since I visited there, but the memories stay with me to this day.

I am so happy to hear that my painting brought warm memories for you. It also pleases me that you are saving this post!

Thank you for your wonderful reply. It has put a smile on my face.

Heave ho! Out we go!

Have you tried selling your work or do you?  You captured Peggy's Cove perfectly in art!  The poem was the icing on the perfect cake!  Have a great day over your way, it's raining here

Oh my.  The painting has such detail, and seems so clean and solid.  Well done.  And then a poem with it.  And, you wrote music too!  Is there anything you can't do?  This is me trying not to be jealous as I'm lost in admiration of your talent.

Thank you dear Linda also for explaining "the groom and his bride" ...

You rendered the symbiosis of fishermen and the sea so very beautifully!

And the picture shows your affection for this place, the atmosphere is very vivid.

This new adventure of your paintings added to your poems is simply fascinating!

Love and hugs.

It has been a lovely day here in Ontario. A mix of sun and cloud, and beautifully balmy weather!

I am pleased that you like my paintings. There is a bit of my soul in every one. Whenever I have sold one, I felt as though a bit of me went with it.

I appreciate your warm response to my post.

Darlin' Dixie ~

This may sound like I'm blowing my own clarion trumpet, but yes, I am thankful to have been blessed with many God-given talents. I cannot take any credit for them as they truly are gifts.

However, I will accept some credit in my industriously working towards developing those talents.  Some have required more dedication than others. Some flow from me like a river to the sea ~ and to be perfectly honest with you, art is not one of them. That requires more of my patience! lol

Have a fantabulous day, Dixie!

Loves 'n hugs,
Linda

I do believe that we are all born with inate talents of varying degrees. If we find one, or more, that captures our interest, we can eventually do it well by working at it. ~ Sort of a labour of love scenario.

When I first began to learn how to play the guitar, I was so frustrated I could have cried. I was not very good and felt that I did not have one ounce of talent. But I practiced and practiced until I actually excelled at it! Dedication does pay off.

By virtue of the fact that the guitar interested me, I must have had a latent talent in that area. It just required more work to bring it out than it did for other things that I do.

Thank you for dropping by and leaving such a nice reply!

I still envy you. I have two brothers. One very artistic and the other plays music by ear as did my mother. She could look at a piece of crochet and copy it,  and could taste something and duplicate the recipe. I seemed to have been passed by and my only talent was having kids! LOL. I carried them easily and delivered with ease.. all six of them.  But what can I do with that talent now!  LOL  martyjo

You are a pet! ~ and might I add that your having carried 6 children easily, is a talent that I did not have! My first daughter was 12 and a half pounds and my second daughter was taken by Caesarean 6 weeks early at 11 pounds! My pregnancies were very difficult and I darn near lost each of them when they were only half-baked, so to speak!

You probably have more talents than you think! Keep your eyes open! lol

Warm hug and smile,
Linda
