Memorial Day The old man in the uniform Stood at attention in the street Saluting stiffly to the flag Marching in place to the drummers beat Children giggled at the clowns Teenage boys ogled pom pom girls Men in muscle shirts drank beer Next to the ladies with party curls As the parade drew to a close Laughter filled the small town air Impatient for their picnic dinner The watchers seemed not to care The four men marched stiffly The last group to be seen One bearing an American flag Wearing his camouflage green Proudly they marched in step As proudly as they had served The crowd, weary of the parade Not showing respect these Vets deserved Suddenly the old man stepped out And joined the soldiers proud Trying hard to keep up the march Saluting to the crowd And then another man stepped out Tears streaming from his eyes And joined the motley crew of five As the crowd dwindled now in size One by one Veterans stepped forward To march behind Old Glory Each face showing pride and pain Each held a different story The band stopped at the end of the street And it was silent but for the sound Of twenty men marching together Forty feet upon the ground What made these former soldiers Generations apart in age Stand up and bear the flag they love When heroes were not the rage It takes a special man to promise Allegiance, to protect and serve Today, we salute those fallen men Give them the respect they deserve. |

Small town parades...that's what we have yearly. More people show up to line the streets than those in the length of the parade today, but it still gives a sense of pride and sends chills to see those who have served and are still here to be honored. M |

The last line says it all - and I sure respect them one and all. |

(big angel hugs) Oh, dearest friend, this made my eyes water up reading as I can imagine these very faces being moved and intermingle the parade with their own colors that make up the whole tapestry of the natural American pride! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, it's in displays like that that make these parades special, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet friend, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! One of my favorites from you, and I still wish you'd send this to the American Legion. One of your best, Sharon. |

Thank you all for reading. It seems we tend to forget why we have this Monday holiday. As I drove to my daughter's house today, at every stop light along the way, there was one or two veterans (one family with kids) in the median waving the American flag and waving at people in their cars....it was very touching. |
