shrilly zinging
at breakneck speeds
to descend earthward in delight,
only to turn about face upward
so fast as to alarm
even split second timing

straight up
winged flight dizzies
Look at me mom look at me

fly

solo soars
now more often than not,
apron strings flap wildly
barely he is tied by the need for
mother’s appreciation

so momma prayed
that each day given
not be the one when he
would double dare
the sun

and until thirty six days into
his twenty ninth year
her prayers were answered

now as ashen remains are safely gathered
forever after to have and to hold,
denial’s inward gaze embraces the picture
of his tiny open mouth
waiting to suckle

but love insists she lift her head
and recall the beauty
of his zinging across the sky
and press into her memory
for the sound of
Look at me mom
look at me

fly

Ah, it must hurt to remember the beauty of his flight and know that you will never see it again. May God bring you comfort and new joy.

should I hold back the wings
of a sparrow
because I could not fly

or should I let my mind
grow wings
and join there

at that heaven place

enjoyed your art jb

I think that sometimes a spirit will choose a creature such as a hummingbird or butterfly, to bring a message to a person that they love and that is grieving for them.  Then, just the sight of such will bring back the waves of grief, yes, but also the joy of the memory.  A very touching poem...I want you to know I understand.

JellyGal~
Were it not for the pure love of loving you ... I couldn't even leave a reply that tries to slip between the tears~

Because of loving you ... and of knowing the love and loss of which you write ... I will sit here and read this piece of your heart many times in days to come~

'but love insists she lift her head
and recall the beauty
of his zinging across the sky
and press into her memory
for the sound of
Look at me mom
look at me

fly'

And when the hummers fly ... as they are doing right now ... I will remember and will think of you ... and of the precious son you lost~

thank you all so much...my son was the most handsome man I know, and that's not just momma talk, he had women troubles since he was in grade school *s*, he had a beautiful heart, talent...he had it all...but he also had a love of danger, and addiction to adrenaline, and later to other substances which too soon took his life...sigh
at our house we have 30+ hummingbirds every year and I hang about 6 feeders up on the balcony and sit and watch them when I need solace.... last year when watching I could hear one going straight up and then down as fast as he could, up and then down...it was a young one flying for the sheer thrill of it.....well it was like my son was before me, and I wrote this to try to bring out his beauty and my love.....thank you for letting me share it and him with you

Greeneyes, thank you

K yes I do…thank you….sigh, where would we be without friends to help us through?

Suthern, your friendship does just that lady, you mean much to me

Ben  He does, His comfort is what keeps me standing, thank you

midnite  thankyou

Dark, thank you, your words hit perfectly, for I would take on hummer wings in a heartbeat

Martie, I know you do and thank you, it’s a sad thing to have in common, but somehow it helps to share…sigh

Nan, thank you, I am crying too

Marge, thank you lady, that the hummers will bring your heart closer to mine is a wonderful thought

I just returned from Mexico where I visted my Mom and the ashes of my father.  The hummingbirds I saw as well and you have captured so much in the rythms and dartings of your work.

Well done.

Jellybeans ~

This is an absolutely beautiful poem to celebrate the reincarnation of your son.  Hummingbirds are fascinating characters - I love to watch them flit about and I'm sure your son was an amazing person.

Very sorry for your loss, but very glad that he is still letting you know he is here with you.

K, I've read every poem you have posted on this site and absolutely none of them has reached me the way this one has. This is really incredible writing, not only because of the topic, but the way you have molded the words together to weave the different emotions into a tapestry of feelings so intense and sad that I feel drained reading them. Such an incredible ending you gave it...I can hear your son's voice saying those words...

This is really special, lady
