Wrote by Lilacs… “What brings you home,” she wondered. “Is it bacon and egg smells of a 5:30 morning? The time when we just sit and talk, quietly, over the rich coffee of dreams come true… “Maybe,” she thought, “it’s the fresh bread…” as she kneaded her memories into pale flesh of tomorrow’s sustenance…adding a last pinch of this, and that, when, a moment later, absorbed in her own, He stood there at the door, aware of his lovely’s deep thought quiet, watched as her shoulders shifted with supple movement, even though he noted she was not as swift with movement as she had been, those 35 years ago… now she moved with determination to do a job well, to not just get it done, and, as nature would provide, her aged determination tasted a lot better in her yield that would lay before them, tomorrow… He backed out quietly, checked his woodwork drawers, withdrew an implement, then started whistling peacefully to himself. A tune from a long ago yesterday… Some full gaited steps later, after crossing over to the northeast edge of their property line, he surveyed the crop, smiled to blue skies for holding white clouds that overhung the red of his heart, a heart that had gone through two wars, having been fortunate enough to come home, to a wife who made his dreams come true… and from the bush he planted well over time ago, that she cared for in his absences, cried over in the dry times, sung over in the good years, he made his pick, clipping carefully, with an artist’s eye, savoring reasons why he loved her so. “What brings you home?” she asked, as he came through the door a second time. “The roses in your cheeks when you see these…” He pulled forth his bouquet, her blush was born again, and two tears met via a kiss. His wife, an author, lovingly paged this memory within her mind, so later, during his pale snoring sounds, she went to her desk, lit a candle and wrote by lilacs. ~*~ A gift, for a gentle spirit…and all of those who are moved by the sense of smell… [This message has been edited by Sunshine (05-11-2005 08:06 PM).] |

Not sure I've ever smelled REAL Lilacs...even as a child we always had Gardenias, and even now they line the house outside my bedroom, and will be blooming very soon....maybe one day I'll know I've inhaled REAL lilacs. Enjoyed the read and the picture, my friend. jwesley |

The sweetest thing, truly is, the wordless love between an elderly couple. I know because I have seen it firsthand. You write the story beautifully. graceful as always Kari |

My gosh Karilea..this is truly beautiful. And to think just this afternoon I picked some of my lilacs for inside the house. I don't know why, but for some reason I saw the woman looking somewhat like the one in Sarah Plain and Tall. Have you seen it on Hallmark Hall of Fame? Oooh and the follow-up, "Skylark"? I know I'm rambling but you just brought back so many memories.. Thank you for this beauty..and the memories. Luv, Hip-Sis. Life is one great big canvas; |

NancyLee.... that movie is one of my favorites, and a common enough jumping off point for my own writings....all I have to do is think "fortitude..." and I am off... Yes, m'dear, and to all of you, thank you for looking in, and GS? Thank you for the PUSH... Love... K [This message has been edited by Sunshine (05-12-2005 06:29 AM).] |

Some years ago, enroute to the bus stop, I filched three lilac sprigs for the secretaries of our office. It was Nat'l Sec'y Day. When the office manager came in about 9 or so, he said "What is with the lilacs?" All three said in one voice, "Ken brought us flowers for National Secretaries Day!!" Within about 15 minutes, all three had gorgeous bouquest brought in. They all loved me and told me my lilacs were better than the bouquet. Thanks for the lovely story you write so seemingly effortlessly and for my memory. Ken Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

I could never tell the difference in smell between Lilacs, Honeysuckle, a Prim Rose, or a Marigold… (Now pine and cedar no problem) But the enjoyment in this write is much deeper than a scent from flowers. Very enjoyable read, indeed. JL |

"He stood there at the door", This so reminded me of Bud. He often came to just stand by the door of where I was in my little "snuggery" and just look at me. As if to say, "she's here, all is okay". And then go back to his T.V watching and copying old movies. A man of very few words, but somehow I knew he loved me. He must have shown it by always coming home from work. No stopping by for a drink with the boys. He said when they asked him to stop for a beer, he would tell them," I have a wife waiting at home and beer in the fridge if I want it." He did bowl, go to the movies alone, play cards with his friends, go to hockey games, play horseshoes at his brother's yard, and other things. But always came home from work. And karilea, I lined three sides of my one acre yard with lilacs. Had many different colors. Beautiful. Then I lined the back line of my neighbors yard. Lilacs sprout and divide easily. I really miss my Northern garden. Thanks karilea for the reminder. lovely work. martyjo |

Well, I might as well cap this off... lilacs have been prevalent in these parts, even though we are considered to still be in "drought" zone; too much rain, and the wheat suffers, and they are saying we've had too much rain... Perhaps we have. I walked down to the channel the other day, and it was roiling with water and muddy sense of movement...thundering its way to some other place... and the lilacs, hyacinth and other fragrant spring tones filled the air on my walk back up the hill. It is not hard to think of the ways we can be good to one another; the problem is, knowing that our own love wants to react the same way. Some people are so very fortunate...some couples really work at their marriage while NOT giving in or backing down from their own beliefs and truths. Some couples will do for the other because they know that their counterpart is doing the best for them, as well. Some just know how to share well, and go their own ways, knowing that home is what they will come to when done with their fun. It's compromise, promise, and just knowing....and trusting, in belief, that makes all the difference. Thank you all for letting me share this bit of spring poetry with you... because it still smells like lilac outside.... and while it does? Let the dreams live. |
