Never close enough

Time has a way of circling back
and we get the chance to see
ourselves mingled with another person
behind dirty faces, or skint knees

Cries at 3 in the morning
tummy aches from watermelon seeds
little I love you's scribbled on the wall

Listening to our mom and dad say things like
"Let them be kids, you were worse than that."
Wondering all the while how they made it
But...time circles back, and now

They get to love another us,
the kind that they can send home
when the hollering gets to loud
or the sugar kicks in.

Exhausted most the time and worn thin
and knowing that today even though
it's our day is far from over.

Supper still has to be made
clothes will pile in the hall
and someone will get hurt,
or skin an elbow
before the day is done.

We pick up the phone and dial
the number to the house across town
and wait for the voice of comfort to answer
just so we can say...

Happy Mothers Day Mama, I love you."

The voice on the other end can hear
the screams of children in the background
and she chuckles long and hard.

"I know you do baby." she replies.

takes a deep breath and sounds like
a mother when she asks:

"What time shall I be there for supper?"

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and even those that aren't mothers yet !!
