Never close enough

Her hands were worn, and wrinkled
yet with ease they raised me up.
Her voice was low and southern
and I knew it was full of love.

I don't think I told her much
just what she meant to me.
There was always tomorrow I thought
plenty of time for her to see.

She broke so many times
when life became to much.
She loved me enough to let me go
though I didn't see it as such.

She wanted to be stronger
than the voice that filled my head.
But she couldn't watch me hurt
so she let me go instead.

She assumed a fetal position that day
in the hallway on the phone.
Lost and missing her babygirl
she was sure her life was gone.

She had carried me in her womb
only to give me up.
She just got tired of fighting
finally enough was enough.

Years went by and I never knew
the tears she cried that day.
I was grown and on my own
before she said what she needed to say

"I wish I had fought harder
and not let anyone stand between -

the love I had for you, and the love
that went unseen.

You were so sad
most of the time and I loved you
enough to know -

that If I ever wanted
you back...

I would have to let you go."

Eighteen years had come and gone
before I finally understood
that as a mother sometimes you suffer
so that your children's lives can be good.

"Thank you mama for loving me enough
to withstand the pain in your heart
And know that we are together now
and nothing will keep us apart."
