Half of my affairs are
driven by a vague,
uneasy feeling.

It rises.
I do, or don’t do.
Then it fades a little.

They also drive cattle by
making the cows
nervous.

But there’s no
percentage in pushing
cows around,

Especially when they
know what you’re
doing.

Ed

I've never tried to push a cow around....and now I know I shouldn't even try.  Enjoyed this!

You must be on my wavelength this week, Ratleader!  The cows got out Monday and for an hour or so, I just tried to keep them from getting onto the highway.  (Was in loose-fitting sandals and am still paying for it, as my ankle just isn't what it used to be--especially over bumpy cattle trodden fields!) Finally I got some help.

Unless one has chased cows a bit, one might not realize that you move quite slowly and often walk in the opposite direction so that later you can angle diagonally in front of them.  There is an art to it.  I can tell from your poem that you know the art form!

Liked your metaphor a lot!  Sure do understand it on or off the cattle field!

Twilight

The cattle
in the meadow
settle down
for sleep;

their figures
as shadows
wide
and low
over autumned fields.

Now
the cow
comes to seek its rest

in milky memories

and marbled dreams.

I snickered through my first read... for the title reminded me so much of my growing up years. *G*

But another read of one of yours is always a delight... and this one has so many subtle layers. Manipulated and knowing it... yes, that would give a major case of the uneasies. *S* Excellent work!!!

Laughing with Misc'e...

We owned a cow-calf operation for a number of years...a few poets around here may remember a few of my bovine posts...

and there's an art, as Misc'e said, to herding cattle...but we never made them nervous...

actually, they knew they were in for a treat when we drove into the pasture...and would come running toward the truck for their cubes [think candy...]

and then, of course, there was the time when I was told to stand in the open gate area with my arms outstretched and "hold back" the bull...

yea...I didn't bite on that one either...

Ed,
This is very poignant, but, I must ask, what about the other 90%?
