Sometimes it’s just about (Living) Life

America,
I’ve never made an effort to speak of you,
though six years have disappeared since I ran fingers through locks pleasingly sweetened,
visualized your snarled narrative transfigured into a single resplendent weave.

(Why is that?)

My teacher once said that you were the love between a people and autonomy,
that although the sun might rise in the East…
it always set in the West…
somewhere just a stones’ throw from Hollywood.

You were Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra;
ebony tresses plaited like a crown,
a perception of flawlessness without a single pin.
I recall,
as if it were yesterday,
how she sauntered onto the silver screen,
scandalous Jezebel,
searching for some coequal in an empire that wouldn't yet look a female in the eye.

When I go to you these days,
I motor past rubbish steaming like bowls of hot rice along your interstates,
drive by clapboard homes stained ashen gray.
Can you hear my speechless tears?
Your daughters confuse understanding,
as they pass nigh in erogenous laughter;
lurid eyes lined heavily with mascara.
I can still taste the heaviness of their unseeing obedience to fashion,
their need for belonging,
and I wonder,
“Was it ever so for our generation?”

In the maudlin fragrance of gardenia's breath,
there still rings the inimitable Sunday morning peal of bells.
Scintillating tones stacked one upon another.
Like unearthed jewels,
I am never closer to an understanding of me,
than when I lean into their timbre,
eyes fixed heavenward,
and sing his song to myself.

Man that was a wonderful, wonderful poem, Kevin! Just amazing. I was awestruck! It is such a meaninful write...powerful...important. Well done. I find your poems are always something I feed on when searching for an "four-course" poem! Kudos!

Thank-you Kevin...and I could say the same about your writings. Your subject matter and sentence structure always leave me wishing I had written your poems. You have a very remarkable talent my friend...and I am honored when you say my work has merit.

Thank-you so very much Kevin. Maybe one day I will convince a publisher of that. I have tried to get my work in print...but just never have managed to get my foot in the door with any publisher. At least I have this place to share with all the wonderful people like yourself. If you really like this poem scroll down the page to the one titled (Winter Does Not Slumber.) You might like it too.

This is awesome, this is a masterpiece!
You really are talented, and I agree, you should be published!

I was drawn in with your choice of words, the images that your words played inside my head. A poem that allowed me to think on a deeper level...My kind of poetry!

Thank-you ARH for those beautiful words. It really is nice of you to say such sweet things. You too though are a great poet. I may not always have time to leave a comment...but I almost always sneak and and read your stuff. Believe me there are several pieces that you have written that I am so jealous of. You have an amazing poetic voice...never stop writing. Anyway I am off to lay down...only had 3 hours sleep so far. Have a great day my friend.

You can self-publish. There are a number of well known authors (including New York Times Best Sellers) that have done so with great rewards including having their book picked up later by the bigger houses. I have done it and sold a good number of copies thus far since I finished it a couple of weeks ago. I even have it catalogued in the Library of Congress now. You can do it if you want to. It hasn't cost me anything (not even a dime - just some time), but I am receiving royalty. You can check it out at www.lulu.com/poethousepress . Let me know if it's something you are interested in or if you have any questions. I for one would buy a book of your work. There are actually a number of poets here I wouldn't hesitate to buy books of/from. There such an amazing collection of brimming talent here.

I believe it is true for every generation....the need. The for what just changes. I really enjoyed reading this thought filled poem...one of your best I think!

Martie...thank-you. The acclaim with which this poem is being received surprises me. Honestly I thought I was pushing it just a little too far when writing it.

I'm really thankful to all of you. Each of your comments really helped put a smile on my face...oh and Kevo...if you happen to be looking at this you are going to laugh...I went and looked at your book online. In a couple weeks I plan on buying a copy. Heck I have to my friend...not only are we both named Kevin...you see my friend we both work for window manufacturers. Kevin - I think this has got to be one of the most stirring pieces I've ever read - it is wonderful in its social commentary, and yet it carries the depth of a poet's heart that feels deeply - your imagery is wonderful - I could go on and on - but excellence is the summation of all said - this is excellent!
