Beneath The Hand Over Your Heart Shells scramble away from me on tiny crustacean legs, waves recede, the wind rushes by and away like breath trying to leave – even the sand is disappearing, giving way to rock. I turn, look back to where I’d been, find fog rushing in – obscuring, as if to say . . . No, there’s nothing here for you. Nothing, you said, remains here – and beneath the hand over your heart . . . I die. Lovers come together, swap breath for breath consuming one another with passions fire then one walks alone on a sandy beach turning to rock, where shells run away, waves recede, and breath wants only to leave – because, Nothing, you said, remains here – and beneath the hand over your heart . . .
