The Noon of Night
©2005 C.G. Ward

not quite the noon of night
and already the silence is oppressive.

she's sleeping in the other room,
but i still hear the stir of her disappointment
as it rustles the sheets.

i said silence, didn’t i?

but we all know silence isn’t real these days,
it’s just a metaphor for the
homogenized version of societal depression we all pray to from
9 to night.

     on the road
     at the office
     on the road
     and even in the bar,

with the will-sucking neon nazis burning our skins
into a fluorescent tan...

that one over there, that girl in the corner –

yeah, she stickered her abdomen with a star
so at least some portion of her life would remain pure
amidst the scars of
too many beers,
not enough sleep
and the sticky taste on her lips in the morning.

yeah, she’s a regular –
for the silence of it all, don’t you know.

but i was talking about my absence down the hall
    - got distracted, or, perhaps explained it... i don’t really know.

i’ll figure it out tomorrow;
the anthem’s on the tube and i’ve gotta stand.

Great ending, Christopher! Imagery great, lights filtered just so, the smell of the bar...even though you didn't TALK of smell, came through.

Excellent!

C...Your writing is one of the (few) reasons I continue to read at Pip.  And this one is now among my favorites of yours.  I understand it, very much enjoyed it and so badly...wish I'd written it.  Damn fine job bud...

hey thanks all

- soul drifter, you'll have to go back if you want to read much... my writes have been limited as of late (i even wrote a prose piece - first in some time and it didn't seem to go over to well. i'm hoping it was the length and not the story!)

You get props just for "noon of night"

(that's one of those things I read and think, "I shoulda thoughta that, dammit"

and silence...man, I shoulda thoughta that too.

The things I hear in silence...but after reading, I suppose you know, don't you?

Christopher,

Mature writing for a man so young; and poignant as well.

I like the travel of the tone.

And yes, silence is pretty much non-existent (except perhaps in the desert early in the morning before the winds come up) and silence is probably not what we really want, is it?

and even the smallest rustle overcomes the silence, every time
and then, the salute *sigh*
