Keeping Away

Keeping away from you
isn't so bad, I lie to myself
isn't it so bad, I cry to myself
sounding like a laugh at dawn
like the rainfall at midnight
keeping away from me
the love I have sought
'cross starry-eyed bridges
burning with all my hopes
I'll be there, everywhere
anywhere you need me
falling at your feet
but only in my moondreams
is my presence beneficial to you
are my presents shiny and new
to impress your wild blue eyes
and make you smile
a glittering Christmas smile
now branded on my heart
as I keep away from you
listening to sad jukebox melodies
till I'm out of quarters
out of order, ordering a round
and laughing in my drink
because silence scares me to death
ah, to the death of me
and to her hair of flame
playing keep away
keep away from you
is the best thing I've ever done
since I always do everything wrong
at least keeping you away from me
is working on me perfectly
painfully so
but the truth of this lie
becomes so hard to bare
that I pretend it's the truth
of who I am
and where I need to go
keeping away from you
I know
so don't remind me
on my answering machine
nearly ever weekend
the sound of your voice
doesn't help things
doesn't move me along
down the tightrope I've made for myself
so keep away, keep away
keep me at bay
at least until I know what to do with
this fragile snowflake of a love
I hold inside myself
every day and night
keeping away
