Though spared from the mosquitoes-infested, dew-drenched drudgery back home, the elements here cut me no slack Trapped under the beatings of the sun, my red-hot skin peels off in weak protest, as it aches for the respite of an unreliable breeze The windy cold gloats at night as I desperately snuggle to be united as one with my jacket My mates and I are caught in a god-forsaken world We become single-mindedly consumed with finding good reception and calling home We suck up the Maggi over self-made fires, cherishing the hiatus from combat rations We lap up the relief from a good cigarette while dissecting the day's events We crap with uninhibited abandon, released from the shackles of everyday routine We take turns to whine about going home and boast about unyielding bowels in the face of nature "toilets" We are family living 24/7 Tough training conditions does not a happy soldier make But at least I'm armed with companionship The collective memories chalk up fast, the loneliness stays an non-issue |

OMG, this is such a wonderfully written piece, kaile, one that will be universally understood by soldiers as well as homeless travellers on mother earth. Keep that pen and paper in your pocket. LOL at the 'crap' and 'bowels' imagery. |
