Fear of heights is such
A very unwelcome companion.
My childhood retreat was high in a tree
But phobias developed with puberty
And adult feet are firmly glued to ground.

During a retreat of looking back
As much as peering ahead
I decided I should
Could
WOULD
Revisit a beloved place
And demons be damned.

Going up is reaching for sky
And not bad at all
But like a kitten screeching
For fire department rescue
Down is definitely difficult.

One slip of foot
Would at best
Have ignominious end;
Thoughts of ambulance
Were uppermost
In quaking mind.

Then a hand was offered
To steady and guide
A voice distracted me
From my imminent demise
And a tail wagged encouragement
Until feet found solid ground.

The exhilaration of “I did it!”
Lifted tired feet in happy dance…
And years blew away in the breeze.

As long as I’m willing to try
I’m not sitting waiting to die.

With many thanks to Lonnie and Squirt, knights to the rescue extraordinaire! *S*

Lee: To know I made you smile makes this post worthwhile… Thank you! *S*

GS: Thank you very much… I’m so glad! *S*

Cpat: It’s the view that gets me going, every time. LOL No waterfall is too distant a trek… but what goes up has to find a way down. I’ve come down many a mountain and/or high hill on my bohuncus! LOL Thank you! *S*

Oh gee...I know that feeling well...
I too am afraid of heights...
even from my own balcony,
I can't look down.

But, the feeling of elation when you have
accomplished something so fearful
is just so fantastic!!

Well done!

Hugs~Nancy

Now while the leaves still dance on the wind
While the moon and the clouds come spinning
Will you whisper my name again?
Again..and again.

nakdthoughts: I used to have the “privilege” of a window office on the 29th floor… I put my work table between my desk and the window… just in case. LOL Thank you! *S*

Enchantress: Your response reminds me of a trip I made to New York – I was enjoying the view from my friend’s balcony until I looked down… I crawled back into the apartment! LOL Thank you! *S*

Well this proves that you are NOT "Over the Hill"! lol

I am terrified of heights! I know, it's hard to believe that an "angel" is afraid of heights! lol

My wasband LOVED the thrill of being high! ~ sky-wise, that is! lol He was a jet-helicopter pilot, twin-engine pilot, skydiver, bungee-jumper, mountain climber...
I was in a perpetual state of panic over his escapades! ~ but not now!

I know that tree....I had one too...although mine is no longer there...so many years and disrepair.  But, any tree will do...because like you say, it's getting down that's the hard part without a couple of friends to lend a hand.  What a wonderful poem....gave me a smile!!!

Smiling wide...you brought back some fond memories this morning, but sadly my trees are no longer here.

Wonderful!

Over the Hill?  NEVER!!!!!!!!!  LOL

I enjoyed the whole poem but what I really liked most was two simple lines that scream LIFE to me and you should have seen the smile on my face when I read them

I find so much positive in that, and strength, and of course a motto that I love to try and live by.  Sometimes I get a little carried away with it, Like maybe I shouldn't go hiking for bears at night with only a camera but at least " I'm not sitting waiting to die". Enjoyed suther gal

Well, they say we came out of the trees, once.  And mostly, we haven't gone back.
You remind me of an old willow and an apple tree.  Just as well they are gone.

I can see you now, tremling so much the tree thinks it's autumn and drops its leaves. Leaving you exposed and breathless.*G. You piant such a vivid picture lady. It's always good to read you and your free verse is sensational.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Wow..this is fantastic....and I'm surprised you're afraid of heights?...Hell, you've been pretty "high" everytime I've met you?....I'm always high and only looking "down" at the aspect of running out of something?...Does this make sense?..Or am I still really that 'HIGH'????

Over the hill, you most definitely ain't! When you are though, I'll be happy to share my sled with ya.......

Sometimes it can be those almost incidental contacts that bring the greatest joy -- sounds like it was that way for you.

EA: ROFLMAO @ angel afraid of heights… you are too much… and absolutely just right! *G* Thank you, my friend! *S*

Martie:  Thank you! *S* “My” tree is long gone, too… and gone to me even as it lived… With many acres to choose from, I think it said a lot of my place in the family that my parents built a hog pen directly underneath my tree… knowing I hate pigs! LOL

DA: But there are always others. *S* Over 10 years ago, I shimmied up a sweet gum to rescue a half-grown cat. When my aunt saw the state of my shredded legs, she asked what happened… I told her I guessed I was too old to be climbing a tree that didn’t have many limbs… She immediately told me I was too old to be climbing trees, period! LOL Thank you! *S*

JM: You’ve got to be kidding… If there had been a camera around, I would be paying blackmail! LOL Thank you very much! *S*

Mark: As long as you blind them with the flash, you’re okay… but do test the batteries before you start! LOL Thank you very much! *S*

Krawdad: But where did I lose the agility? LOL Thank you very much! *S*

Kethry: ROFL… Exposed… yes… breathless… definitely! *S* And Squirt should either be awarded for bravery or stupidity… he kept standing so that if I fell, I’d have a dog mattress. *G* Thank you! *S*

Toerag: But my feet are still on the floor when Fosters is in hand! LOL Thank you so much, my friend… seeing your name here makes me smile. *S*

Ratleader: I’ll take you up on that... as long as you promise to steer! LOL Yes, indeed… some days bring unforgettable joy… making all the rest bearable. *S* Thank you very much! *S*
