I met them when we were all very young And dressed in primary colors It was a simple time with monosyllabic needs I learned how to read with them, and to spell Together, we would thread letters onto short strings Knotting them into ordered thoughts But, times and needs change And Jane, ever observant, was content for a time With her view from over a white picket fence Though seeing, was not the same as feeling She set out for a more sophisticated lifestyle To see for herself what the rest of the world, felt While Dick, the boy who loved verbs Who would run and run, jump and jump The boy who spent page after page coming and going Would, at last, exhaust himself, coming to rest Sleeping in doorways I knew nothing of their lives until much later Busy, as I was, with much the same things Yet, do miss the “Janes” and their hot eager clinging But, never regret barely missing the chances To keep the nights warm by pissing myself Still, I thread into words, the letters they taught me Knotting them into thoughts of the past Stringing them around what “might have been” Tying the ends tight to the ends of what “is” And make for myself these Mobius Strips [This message has been edited by wranx (11-02-2004 11:24 PM).] |

Wry humour Wranx Reminds of me of a King who said "but what happens when my daughter gets a little prick". "Well we can't handle everything", said the Prime Minister. She'll just have to sleep with it until the right Prince arrives. Great words. Dave |

I really wish you had written this as an apostrophe to them rather than about them to us. John Read: “For Her” by Mark Strand |

(chuckling)... John... as the old saying goes... if wishes were horses beggars would ride... what ever the voice chosen... I personally think no matter how we..you or I might want the author of a piece to write it...or how we might see that the subject lends itself to some other approach... to say we wish they had written like we wanted instead of the way they did is bit..well.. pretentious isn't it? I mean..really... poets write poetry as they hear it..and us imposing the idea we wish they had done it differently is like saying we know better than them how they should write... personally... I don't think any of us here know enough about the way words are presented or what they mean to the people who do present them to say we know better than them how to approach a subject or write a verse... |

And I am wondering, John, why you would assume this isn't that apostrephe that you have a yen for... but I have the pleasure of knowing this poet, and trust me, he always has more to say than most expect. I also trust you will find out. Mobius Strips...shaking my head here. you are a gentle funny yeti-man. |

Wranx, I can't think of much to write that others haven't! To end it with a Mobius Strip was great, but the observations within were incredibly written. You have such a soft pen that produces such a poignant write. It writes depth as gently as can be written. miscellanea |
