Emotional Goblins

“From ghoulies and ghosties” says old Scottish prayer,
Emotional goblins come hovering there,
Bedeviling our thoughts while encasing our hearts
And leaving souls scattered in serrated parts.

They tease of lost loves in sadistic array
Reminding us all of our role in the fray.
We think they are friends called self pity and mourn,
In truth, they are foes who for us have such scorn.

We wish we could just be alone to forget
The trials and heartbreaks life gives as a debt.
But repay we must for the acts we have done.
We have stuff within us to make shine the sun!

So lift up your heart in the brightness of day
Those demons that taunt us will banish away
They feel quite at home in your head, that I know
But keep your heart high and away they will go.
