Only Once

For me, I'm sure, it's only once.
And though a silence in your life
now and then sits with us in the living room,
I've never asked. Convinced, you see,
that what I feel has been enough,
for both of us I am content
to supplement the occasional distance
with acceptance, even peace,
as when I sit on the cliff above the beach
and watch the surf coming and going.
Should it hurt? Is the sand any less intimate
with the sea because it stays? You are the tide,
and if the affairs of men cannot wait,
I must.
