http://www.novareinna.com/bridge/laika.html The above link takes you to a beautiful memorial page to the dog Laika, first living creature from Earth to go into space. Though all the articles called her a husky mix mongrel, she looked very similar to my Jack Russell terrier Skippy, so I think sje was a terrier mix. At any rate, she was sacrificed for a bit of information. |

aye she's a beautiful thing and you're right i do see the jack russel resemblance. how do you look at that face and decide, hey let's hurtle her into space with no plans for a return? |

I cannot imagine having been the one to put her in the capsule, knowing it was her final trip. What we did to 'man's best friend' *sigh* Raph, thanks for the inspiration for you know, it came from you...you sweet Canadian puppy. LOL BTW, did you know Leika means barker in Russian? |

I did, but only because i've been fascinated by Laika and the russian space program for years. At least they finally admitted the truth, which incidently is just as horrible. The myth went that laika was perfectly fine but eventually died within a week in space from lack of oxygen. cruel but almost peaceful. the truth, she died of a stress induced heart attack as her capsule hit high temperatures and turbulence pushing through the atmosphere. not so peaceful. well at least the resulting technology has allowed us to keep an accurate eye on wmd's in oil rich..i mean hostile countries. |
