you said just follow my lead
and that's just what i did
down the sidewalk under the bridge
against the sky  bluer than the scar
you gave me beneath my chin
on icy southern mornings
that are icier than the northern ones
because you're not used to the sting
i followed you
until i couldn't anymore
i never wanted to hurt myself
but you seemed bent on
tragedies and people in danger
and you were so good at
falling like a hero and
crying without making a sound.

you said just follow my lead
and in that game of pretend
you were always the strong one
and i was the sidekick
faithful but gloryless
down to the basement past the broken tv
and the garage filled with scattered childhoods
in flattened cardboard boxes
past the old swingset and the broken fence
that the weeds loved far more than we ever did.

you said just follow my lead
as you took my hand
and spun me around the dancefloor
in my best dress
on the day they said
you became a man
i understood even then
i was a decoy
meant to divert attention
so your awkward youth
could pass more quickly
and the camera never captured
the way your hands still shook
when you talked to girls.

you said just follow my lead
and i let you do all the talking
when you understood
that i couldn't cry
in the front pew of the funeral
you put your arm around my shoulders
and sitting on top of the old car
as you soaked up the soft night
and the songs you more than once told me
would change the world
if the world could be changed
you explained to me
that growing old is beautiful
but people don't grow old anymore.

you said just follow my lead
and my friends thought you were weird
because you reeked of makeshift brilliance
and you were never home for dinner
and your adventures were sometimes sordid
and devoid of purpose or destination
but great things were always
what you did best
and my life would be the grand sum
of stagnancy and speculation
if it hadn't been for all the times
you took me with you.

you said just follow my lead
it was the first great thing
i ever did.

Wow!  I'm going to have to read through this a few times.  And I'll be happy to do so.. There's just so much to captivate.  This truly was a mesmerizing read..

I have a feeling that this would make a great short story....if you fill in the blanks...even a novel.  Much enjoy your way with words.

I believe with this one I just joined your fan club, lady.
