Candle, Hand

Have you seen a candle glow
into a hand that reaches toward its warmth?
Have you been the candle, been the hand?
Have you felt the growing heat within,
the spreading light run deeper than skin,
the shine through finger ridges,
touching the lines along your palm?
Have you shuddered within,
following the glimmer of the flame,
while the draft changes in the nearness
of a hand to your shining draw?
Have you known the hand
that holds your light, that curving presence
glowing within your glow, around your glow,
holds back the wind that comes,
when it would gutter you down,
turn you cold in the dark?
Have you realized how close a need can be
when the candle warms the hand
against the cold and draft,
and the hand too, warms the candle?
