if you wanted to
and knew it was ok
that way would be fine
with no changes

just the you of you
letting it all go
til it broke open
and made pools

where nothing had been

I read behind your eyes
when you were tiptoes
on back stairs
looking in on permission

it was not cold then
but you had the signs
and crossed your arms
pretending there was no hunger

but I knew you hadn't eaten
