Given hour hands denote the time
hourly mice fitted the rhyme
heads soon rolled,
decapitation extolled
in the name of self-defense
vengeful murders then made sense.

Centuries of rodents fall in line
to grandfather clock's repeated chime
tails in the rhyme depicted chopped heads
when men of the cloth courted instead.

When men feigned blindness in jest
their rumps were carved at best
after a run in with a farmer's wife
or a lady of the court
heads were sliced by a carving knife
a first and last resort!

Given clocks faithfully told time
one o'clock mice fitted the rhyme
the hour struck, the critter dropped
a farmer's wife had tails cropped
heads then rolled
decapitation was extolled.
