Ring on the finger
affection lingers
ring of posies at a pocket base
made sure foul germ odors were erased

Was a time when children chanted
with pockets full of posies granted
stuffed with the sweet scented herbs
meant disease odors would least disturb.

With foul odors thought to transmit disease
plague germs in London had to be appeased
afore Great fire vanquished the disease source
At-shoo!, at-shoo! one fell ill of course.

Ring on the finger
affection lingers
ring around a rosy
made a rash feel cozy

Children afflicted by a ring rash on the skin
followed the advice of more seasoned kin
they filled their pockets whilst they sneezed
the spirit of the plague had to be appeased.
