Thinking of You as I Fall Asleep... I wonder about all the women in your life, if there were any who loved you as much as me. Were there any who noticed the arch of your brow - how it always lifts higher when you mean to tease? Was there another who couldn't help falling deep into the blue of your eyes that dance like sunlight in summer pools whenever you laugh? Did some other woman love the slope of your nose, the line of your jaw, the set of your chin? Was she drawn to the subtle strength in your face like I always was? Was there a woman who knew by heart the curve of your back, how you balance your weight- could she recognize you from a long way off by the way that you stand? Did the sound of your voice, make another woman's heart jump and somersault within her breast? Did the touch of your hand make her skin come alive - make her quiver unchecked with each fingertip's stroke? Did anyone else love your body like me? From the strength of your chest, where I loved to lay, to the shape of your legs that I longed to feel entangled with mine, I never grew tired of looking at you. Your face is still the only face in my dreams. Tucked in the corners of my heart I've held your memory close every day, held on to it stubbornly against the staggering hope that I'd see you again. And now, long years later, against all the odds, you've turned back to me again, like you always did when we were young. And though I know there have been many women between I can't help believing that you've always known I'm the one who loved you most of all. 12/26/04 |
