Saddle up and bundle tight, It’s gonna be a real cold night, Take your mare and head out west, Towards the hills, the boss done guessed, That is where those squatters are, He doesn’t think that they’ve got far, Run ‘em off the Double D, ‘Cause the boss he doesn’t want to see, Hide nor hair of a single squatter, On his land or a drinkin’ his water. I saddled up my buckskin mare, Headed west, out yonder there, Up in the hills was I a goin’, When it up and starts to snowin’, The wind was howlin’ and I near froze, It felt like I done lost my toes, When up ahead I some smoke, It was them there squatter folk, A huddlin’ by a mesquite fire, Singin’ like some church robed choir. Silent Night them folks was singin’ I could almost hear a church bell ringin’ My gosh I thought, it’s Christmas Eve, And I’m a tellin’ these folks to leave, Or be ran off, it don’t seem right, To run folks off on such a night, But I’m a cowhand, nothing more, Do what I’m told, no matter the chore, So I rode in and got on down From my horse, my face a frown. Before I spoke, they handed me, A cup of coffee, hot as can be, Said howdy stranger, have a seat, You look near frozen, you must be beat, How about some food, not much we’ve got, But ours is yours, at least it’s hot Have some cornpone, ain’t got no meat, And then some fritters, they’re quite a treat. So I had a sit, got warm and ate, What I had to do, I shure would hate. Now I got to thinkin' what had been said, Not a single squatter left on the spread, I didn’t see me a squatter one, Not a single hide nor hair, not none, Now the way I figger, I ain’t no liar, ‘Cause there was a passel there by that fire, Menfolk and women, and children galore, Certainly not one, but a whole bunch more. And when I a left ‘em, some meat they had got, A Double D longhorn, I accidentally shot. |

Not sure if I should cry at the ending of that or laugh but I will wish you a very, very Merry Christmas Tim. |
