I Thought I Would Catch Up

On the twelfth day of Christmas
I thought I would catch up.
I sat down to breakfast,
hot choc’lit in my cup.

All my bills piled next to me
not one held a surprise;
as I gazed t’ward the horizon
a tear came to my eyes.

For all the blessings given,
‘twas quite enough I thought;
I had a chicken in the garage
and two pick-ups in the pot.

Not one bit of vanity
could hold my joy at bay,
nor could an element of insanity
mar the hope I held today.

I picked up my pen,
put my finger to my nose,
messages I had written
could woo the petals from a rose.

All my loved ones and debtees
would surely smile with glee
in the wishes I would send them
in response to their, “Remit, Ma’am, please!”

So along with the populace
seated ‘round the globe,
dining on their blessings
in each lustrous wrinkled robe,

I’ll make good on my promises,
to pay is only right,
and when all is said and done,
I’ll sleep easily tonight.
