Pigeons and doves are too commonplace
to capture the love of most fine feathered connoisseurs,
as not many appreciate meandering through the multitude of droppings,
roosted messes ‘neath bridge tresses and airport  canopies.
And those porcupine wires in Salem,
designed to trap and kill pigeons...fail,
as those pigeons fight back,
uniforms of common greys, plumage of blue bars
that roost and navigate in their adopted homes.
No, they are not natives, but aliens,
brought here in the 1600’s from Europe,
and they mate for life...all year long,
so now the Willamette River grain elevators
are home to these armies of blessed birds
even as bridge crews battle them daily.
Broadway Bridge, full of pigeons, battled
by pigeon patrols in action
that must clean the bridges over and over again.
They install screens to catch the birds droppings;
meanwhile the peregrine falcons fly about freely,
catching those pidgies every chance they get.
But these commonplace birds procreate year round,
so the bridges of Portland are under always under attack,
constantly needing repainting and repairs.
And as 5 tons of droppings attack a local church bell tower,
they install netting to protect the bell towers.

But what if you coaxed them away to private coops,
let them have their offspring out of the city,
would they forsake the bridges and bell towers?

Nope We have tons here too and TONS of poop too.  The net and spikes don't keep the little co-ers out, no way!  As you know you learn to walk with radar, and spend the entire year with a stiff neck from dodging them in the rafters above.  LOL, Kacy you slay me the topics you pick.

These birds have nothing on the excrements of those darn geese! (another problem here and I am sure there?)

Good write and you always get me laughing and thinking.

Don't mind the pigeons - or sea gulls - and love to watch and watch out for the geese - but try living with Bats taking up residence in your house - eeeek - getting up to head down out of the loft to the bathroom was a whole new adventure until we were able to evict them from our home - blessings of country life

Enjoyed this consideration -

Susan

Oh my, Susan, that sounds a bit unsettling!  I've had bats fly past my head before, and it scared the dinner out of me. LOL, and they were OUTSIDE the house at the time.
