Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2004-10-19 10:20 PM

I could be mistaken, and often am
Concerning matters in the past

But, I believe I may have killed
The very last pheasant I saw in this state

Not to say that I killed them all
Or even, that I had killed more than a score or so

The Fox and Red-tailed Hawk were always more menace than I
And No-Till farming, the greatest of dangers

“Wing shooting” was little more than an excuse
For taking a late morning walk through the solitude of a stubble field
With a shotgun cradled in the elbow of an orange plaid shirt

And even though the 12 gauge was often nothing more than a prop
And my plaid flannel, only a point of interest
In a landscape framed by a farmhouse window

Still, I was hunting after all, and without a dog
So I always made my walk halting and irregular
Hoping to make a rooster nervous enough to break cover

It was always the young and impetuous that flushed for me
The wiser and older held fast, invisible to all but a good dog’s nose

The last Pheasant I saw was just such a bird
Bronze, Russet and Gold, trimmed in Royal colors
Dancing on short broad wings in front of the muzzle

That is what I saw when I laid low
The Prince of October in an explosion of Autumn

And though there have been other hunts in other states
This one stays close to me

The bright and furtive eyes shining from his crimson mask
The tight white dignity of his collar
His pale leggings and wheat colored beak

Scratching and pecking through the papers on my desk

Ah...

I have much to say,
but I think you already hear.

One of your best...
possibly one of the truer...
certainly,
one of heart.

You made me homesick.

I moved less than five miles away from my beloved park and not a red tail in sight.

(Well there's always mine, but hell, I can't see it. And that one hasn't soared for ages. *chuckle*)

Ask yer brother bri, how well I know and worship these princes of October.

Beautiful m'yeti....

you get a kiss for this:

Good God, I shall always be amazed at how you do this:

Scratching and pecking through the papers on my desk

starting with a thought and ending with a story on the other side of the write.

Yup.

You know ~ I never saw a pheasant, ate lots, but never saw one until today and now I will never eat another one.  I had the same problem with a cow once that grew from a calf and its fate was sealed ~ didn't eat meat for ages that time.

You wrote this with such heart Ed, and you wonder why we care if your feet get cold?  We luvs ya!

aah... now.. this brings back memories of wood smoke and frost... along with two German shorthairs and the way they worked a field...

it also brings to mind why I no longer hunt..
(chuckling)... The last thing I killed still stares with blank eyes that filmed over slowly into mine... when I think about it..

nice work Ed... nice indeed.

the Prince
has been waiting some time for this

you just opened the window
onto another big field...

where next time
he will just
lay low

a great poem Ed

Nice poem, but why must we destroy what we admire?
