we were front seat back seat
long car quiet
heater was on
but the windows were down

you talked to me with your eyes
I watched you in the mirror
and listened with my arm
over the seatback

you said holding hands helped
and he didn't mind
he was asleep now
and had already made his donation

it was a long way home
but you had enough tears
and residue too of the night
before when you were out of town

that was a longer drive
but you picked me up then
the next morning at dawn
and had me hold you

til the sad songs ended
and we turned off the radio
and were just strangers
that knew each other more

then a lifetime of lovers
