I scoffed at Eros Unaware That his bow was aimed at me I continued to laugh With hoots of cynical glee I did not hear the twang and hiss and hum When Eros had set the arrow free My laughter drowned the sound Of the silver arrow's flight Though not enough to conceal The sickening thud it made When it pierced into my heart The wretched arrow on my bosom I grasped 'Twas silvery cold Against the warm, scarlet ooze I knew I have been wounded forever Oh, how I shrieked and screamed and roared More with anger than with pain More with shame What irony love holds! I bled to death Yet lived to tell this tale Yesterday I scoffed at Eros Today he had me Wrapped stupidly around love's little finger I do believe That Eros is a mean, vengeful little devil Clad in g- string and angel's wings. |
