Ever-Hopeful Banjo I’ve become a good listener; my strings always hum in the big round resonance here, though they never let me play. Things don’t get any easier, but it’s something. Living in an orchestra, I’ve learned to get by on little things, be glad they let a banjo in at all. I won’t kid you, I’ve never found a place among the flutes and horns; viola ignores me, and the harp weeps openly if I try to play. Even the violin, oh she wants it all right, every violin loves to fiddle, even the Strads, but I know she’ll never let herself go. I dream of solos, picture a duet with cello where my voice rings out like fried bacon and the jealous horns have an utter cadenza.... My skin gets tight at the thought, and it's real rawhide here, I’m no vegetarian. I tune up and warm up for every rehearsal, but mostly I just wait. I know some day there’ll be a symphony for banjo. Then I’ll shine. [This message has been edited by Ratleader (07-26-2004 06:38 PM).] |

Top of the morning to you, Ratleader! When you began writing about musical instruments, I became all ears. My son has a lonely banj resting in the corner. I could well invisualize this in many ways. I love the solos in Dualing Banjos, but hopefully the rest of the orchestra will put down their bows for some real picking of another flavor. Enjoyed. misc'e |

Ed I love to hear a banjo....it has so much history and tells a story. A sensitive hand can make it sound wonderful! I enjoyed the personification of the instrament...you had me feeling much sympathy. |

You already do. *S* I love this, my friend... the delightful playfulness doesn't hide the poignancy... this is personification at its best... and knock your socks off excellence! *S* |
