I see you staring at me, though I feel I don’t know who you are. You often are called names only my elders once heard....Things like Sir and Ma’am. Your hair is so sparse, leaving enough space for a landing strip. A hat, you say? Your hands, showing the spots that were not there before, the skin no longer smooth and tight... Your thoughts, sometimes wandering or forgetting the last thought you had. Your taste, sometimes dulled slightly, as the spices become heavier over time. Your sunny side up eggs sprinkled darkly with pepper. You no longer sprint like a gazelle, or walk proudly as would a male lion protecting it’s pride. Your pride, once strong, resilient, now content to acceptance...often wondering if a smile given was genuine or simply empathy. Even the little blue pill doesn’t do everything you thought it would....though you have the heart and desire that beats ever strong, a torrent of passion flowing your veins. For naught? Who are you? You, the wise one....now so filled with that which you never had when you were like me. Like me....oh yes, I forgot...you are me. And, just one favor, don’t call me sir all the time. Maybe twenty years from now...I think that is next week. |

Yes, Sir, won't call you Sir, Sir...No Sir, won't go against the grain, Sir... ![]() This, from a "Ma'am". |

Thanx Marge, I noticed the crafty dodge away from the dreaded "S" word...sorta like the "M" word that our loving Sun happened to mention just above your comment... I have a few thoughts for her, but I cannot share them here upon the blue....something like smartypants...or some other smart word. |

"Your pride, once strong, resilient, now content to acceptance...often wondering if a smile given was genuine or simply empathy." Barry, I don't know about your pride, but you can tell that "wise one" that he should be proud of his writing, for, honestly and without empathy, he writes beautifully. ![]() |

I like this definition of the word best of all..and by it call you "sir" From Webster's (1913) Dictionary Definition: \Sir\, 1. A man of social authority and dignity; a lord; a master; a gentleman; -- Love the poem and can relate.. ------ice ><> |

Misc'e... Thanx, and yep, looks like you may have it... Dix. I know you dear, and have no doubt that you would do well remembering all that there might ever be... Sun....what sticky buns? OH....those sticky buns....have you been sitting in syrup lately? hehe....Yes Ma'am....fire when ready.... Ice, you are right....I guess I could accept it under those circumstances.... |

Ah, I see that you see "Sir" as a title of the aged. Where I come from it is a title of respect and of admiration. Perhaps that is the martial arts within me. It is a title of the Gallant, for the Knights of old were titled "Sir". It is one letter short of "Sire", the title of most noble blood. For me, should I use "Sir", it is reserved for those to whom I feel great tenderness. So you see, it is all in the heart behind the word, rather than the word itself. So know if I call you "Sir" and you know I do, this then is where it springs from. For you, Sir, have a heart most gallant, tender, and words of the greatest beauty. See -- "Sir" isn't all bad . . . ![]() Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you. Joy is a state of mind. |

Susan, I knew this would draw something out of the depths of you, for you have many times called me sir, and I know or knew why...and I do appreciate the thoughts and feelings that you speak of, the desire to use such a title under the circumstance. You, fair maid...thee art most kind and for thy efforts thee shall always be a gem most kind to me...and I shall never quibble over being called Sir.... Thanx Susan.... And you should carry the title of "Lady"... for this is a title deserving of one who has the respect of another as well... |

Barry -- Thank you for your kindness, and I am glad that you are aware of the intent behind my use of the word, for truly it is so. ![]() Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you. Joy is a state of mind. |

An interesting and very genuine write...as always. You do know, that within the body resides the eternal child...and yes, change comes...but the spirit does not age...not ever TD |

I must protest, for the word "Sir", is not used for the years you may or may not have accumulated, but for the mastery of your writings. Superb poem. |

K. you always have a way of coming out with what is wise, truthful and so meaningful. Remind me again one day when the true meaning of "Sir" escapes me once again. |

INot2B.... Thanx, I do agree with you and all the others....sometimes we forget who we are to others...and a gentle though firm reminder is in order.... Thanx again. |

I am so oblivious that I have been known to forget my own age. (literally--this is the third year that I am forty-three!) *chuckle* But I've read this several times and you left me bemused as I pondered how often the face in the mirror doesn't match the feeling inside. Somedays that's a good thing, somedays not. Mostly I just find it startling. (and I waited to reply, trying to be the last.... ![]() Hugs Barry! I enjoyed muchly, but then, I always do. |

Karen, thanx Ser. You are a dear, even though you and I share one common trait, being very very close to the Psych Ward... (kidding).... Always enjoy your replies, for they seldom do not bring a laugh or a wry grin....they always do!!! I know what you mean about forgetting, forgetting what?...Oh well, someday I will remember...and you tried hard to not be first... |

Very Barry You know, to me you are very Barry...but others may call you other things...but I'm sure that "sir" is used as respect, not old age. Yep, because you are deserving of just that...respect! So there! ![]() |

Ah but your words prove that your heart and soul beat strongly in a world where you are forever the young warrior who rescues the maiden and makes hearts old and young alike beat a pattern of romance that fills their thoughts with dreams and visions. How you doing, my friend....**hugs** |
