Couples regularly grace my window ledges
nothing against a show of affection
at a certain moment, have to close up
want to see them take their embrace home
it's so late at night

I ride the metro late at night
another rider pulls his last fag
lights inhales a long drag
then tosses an empty in plain sight
the why care attitude is relatively new to me
came back into a world of the 'service follows me'.

Got to watch where my paper wrappers go
into a refuse bin where litter doesn't show
there is a place to discard the unsightly
arguably there and determined
keep the area free of vermin

in a sweep the couple rises from romantic embraces
nothing like a show of affection,
while I lean against my broom in reflection
of another night of patience at my expense
I have to close the premises for the night
stack the chairs, piled out of sight
to ride subway where other wrappers blow in
Embrace the clutter of cartons out of their bins.

I suppose these thoughts might be in the head of a cafe owner sweeping up after  his fair share of clientele..there's a photographer who captures the look.

Martin,
Ain't it the truth. I taught my kids to not be litterbugs. But one time I was driving with my son, he was 16, and I was angry. I through my gum wrapper out the window proclaiming I was in a littering frame of mind. He displayed that back to me the next day. Neither one of us have littered since! Good write...

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
