Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2004-10-15 05:23 AM

It, or they
Started appearing weeks ago

It, because I’ve never seen more than one at a time
They, because the one I see varies in size

Somewhere between a cat and a mouse
As black and unformed as a fleeting dark thought

At first I would notice the visitors on peripheries
At the edge of my vision
Skirting along the creases of things

And it was easy to tell myself
That it was just some trick of light or focus

Or, half-joke to myself
That it was simply a bit of undigested
Hallucinogenic gruel

Lately though, it has become bolder
Moving across my field of vision
As if it had become comfortable in my presence

Gliding with the fluid grace of a Chinese acrobat
Up and over my desk, disappearing behind it

And in its’ smaller form, letting me watch it
Roll across the floor and into my shoe

That they exist at all is not in question
They are validated in my acknowledgement

The “how” of it
Perhaps an extension of my own existentialism

Now, only the “whys” remain

Why do they come dressed as a shadow
A flat-black nothing, neither Ogre nor Angel?

And why manifest themselves only in this shack?

Could it be
That they are a product or function of this hermitage
And representative of things left undone?

Or merely a device
To provide a little animation in a place lacking “life”?

YOU KNOW I LOVE THIS

"Now, only the “whys” remain"

and methinks I'd die without them.

Methinks this be a fine poem
for the middle of October,
when life sits shelved between
summer and winter,
waiting to fall into
an unknown...

ah yes...you've got me smiling
first thing this morning...

Ed, this has a certain observational/contemplative/matter-of-fact feel as only your writes do and has rippled its visual into my imagination and awareness -- thanks for the impressions.

Was telling ghost stories around a bonfire last night, this would've been a great one.  It is just a story, isn't it Ed?

LOL@Duncan...

You know what my shadows are?

my doubts.  they haunt me day and night.

Ed, I loved this!

I am so happy you posted this, you are a true wonder and this is maybe something that we can never answer for sure, but just know that I know.

ED!

FROM ONE WHO KNOWS ALTOGETHER TOO WELL:

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES INTERACT WITH THIS THING.

THIS IS THE PRECISE DESCRIPTION OF SOMETHING I DID INTERACT WITH, AND WITH DREADFUL RESULTS.

I'll tell you more, but not here.....

not kidding, Ed

Your use of imagery is wonderful in this write Ed.  As to seeing things...
I believe I've been there and done that a time or two....lately more than before..

Well done Sir.

I have to admit that I've been amused by the fact that I've been hallucinating...I mean, it figures, right?
(wranx has been keeping too much of his own company...and WAY too much of his own council)

But, no Ed...I'll not call to it

No, "Here kitty mousey blobbything!"

Ed

You brought the reader right into the wonder of your vision with this poem.  You are an intuitive and aware person, it makes sense to me that you would see and feel things out of the ordinary.  I have seen a few things myself, but they were things of light.  Take care of you, ok!?

As Dave Allen said

Can you house train the sprites to tidy up.

They're Woodbridge Woofanpoofs.

They live just down the road from me.

Perhaps you cast illusions line
To fish a fish you wish to dine
Aligning all the true and real
To see your shadows of appeal

And in the depth within the core
You'd sneek a peek of evermore.

A fine write.
