The Leprechaun and the Raven
Copyright 2004 Linda L. Dowd

Through the open window
I spied a leprechaun,
Dancing in my garden
in the early rays of dawn.

I stood quite still and listened
to his singsong incantations,
He sang from deep within his soul
of his joys and lamentations.

He’d spin and twirl, leap and prance
~ kicking his heels high,
With flap of arms he tried to rise
in to the rainbowed sky.

He landed on his bottom
but his smile belied his pain.
He then popped up with alacrity
and then he tried again.

The flapping and the waving,.
soon tired his little arms.
~ “Its seems that I'm a leprechaun,
who has lost his lucky charms!”

Lines of sheer frustration
soon etched his elfin face.
He raised a tiny fist up high,
trilling, “This is a disgrace!”

“My fairy friends have gossamer wings
and flit about the sky
But here sit I, stuck on the ground,
“Oh me! Oh me! Oh my!”

He sauntered through the garden paths,
alone and feeling blue,
~ Knowing what he wanted,
but not knowing what to do.

The elf then heard a raven
cawing out his name,
He couldn't bear to meet its eyes,
as his head hung down in shame.

“What seems to be the problem?”
the bird asked quizzically.
“May I lend you a helping wing,
and end your misery.”

“Thank you for your kindness,
but there’s nothing you can do.
I’m just a hapless, wingless elf
who can't fly in yonder blue.”

“I do not have gossamer wings
to lift me in the air,
I only have two useless arms
~ unable to fly me there.”

“Rejoice, my friend, the time has come,
for the bell of joy to ring.
Hop aboard this air express,
flown by feathered wing.

He climbed onto the raven’s back
and held on very tight.
And soon the two were swooping
through skies so blue and bright.

The leprechaun delighted
in all that he could see,
He was even happier
than dreamed he'd ever be.

Lakes lie there before him,
and rivers, hills and streams,
~ Everything far lovelier,
than those seen in his dreams.

The world was so much bigger
than he ever thought it’d be
It stretched for miles and miles
~ from sea to shimmering sea.

When the flight was over,
the crow cawed, “Don’t be blue.
Whenever you would like to fly,
I’ll come around for you.”

He felt a sense of freedom,
and a peace within himself.
He no longer envied others,
for he was happy to be an elf.

Linda - I know you've heard this before, but you would be a fabulous children's author, if you aren't already - and this would make a book of great fun.  You've talent my friend, for bringing magic into a tale-

This cinches it.  You've GOT to start publishing in children's periodicals...you capture the imagination of any age, but you have the ability to let children know what fun is, and for us adults?  Why we should relish the child in us all...

Okay I told you I would be back.  I absolutely couldn't wait to come read it again in the peace of my own home with no interruptions.  The visual images of his temper tantrum was hilarious to me and very easy to see.  I felt as if I were looking outside my window and watching this whole thing happen.  A pure joy to read, the vocabulary was great, the images superb, and the story ..... well, fantasmagical.  Ummmm can you tell I liked it.
