Pipedreams

At ground level, a network of pipes and pumps
lead to tanks painted the color of sand
and to the deep water loading docks beyond.
Tankers slip quietly in, fill up
and leave under the watchful eye
of the Coastguard.

At night, tiny lights sparkle on the towers,
a miniature cityscape enshrouded by rising stream.

Around the clock, men and women
costumed in masks, goggles
and orange hats tend to their tasks:
measuring gages, testing meters,
welding weak spots or tinkering
with tools.

Beneath the goggles,
the workers’ eyes express exhaustion
brought on by fear and the constant frenetic pace.

Minute quantities of carcinogens stream silently
into the sky. The worst cannot be detected
by human olfactory nerves. All of the gases are toxic,
but in close proximity, in parts per million,
some can kill a man within two minutes.

Under attack, or in an accident,
there is a great potential
for multiple, increasingly devastating
explosions of fire,
for launching of random steel projectiles,
and poisoning of the air --
from the elementary school
less than a mile away
and the surrounding suburban
dwellings,
to the historic downtown district
which has stood since the 1880’s.

What they make is more precious than gold.
The pay is superb, the stock options fantastic.
There is even a cancer plan available at a reasonable cost.
And the death benefits? Unparalleled.
Peace of mind for one’s family.

Oh Maree, you are balm for the soul. I've been completely blocked, nothing new written (until this) for weeks.

Also working, briefly, at an oil refinery, hence this poem. Definitely not my cup o' tea, that kind of atmosphere! I don't know how those people stand it.

Thank you!!!

Working at an OIL REFINERY!?!

Little wonder you're creativity was stifled.

...Bad Ju Ju!

Happy you've gotten back on track.

And? yanno? I never noticed how much I lean on water. Now that I think about it, it shows up ALOT.

Ya think it might be that I live in a shack that's too close to a river? LOL

Nice to see ya again

Thanks Sey!

Heheh, Wranx, yep and it sure felt like bad juju, too. Very dangerous environment, keeps everyone running on adrenalin. I'm determined now that the next car I buy will be a hybrid (since electric seems to have lost popularity). No reason at all for cars to be made with gas combustion engines anymore.

Yep, prolly has a lot to do with living in a shack by the water!

definate and precise

enjoyed

and if we don't soon better our infostructure, we may not even have to worry about terrorists. The people in this country have no idea as to the chemical leaks and accidents?

Good thoughts and perspective
