What Can I Say (Apartment For Rent)

Looking through ripped newspaper pages
looking for an apartment for rent
with my lower middle class wages
and my white Nova covered with dents
that's all I have left to me, but still
I rely on your love
I lie for your love
it isn't easy

What can I say, when I see you I flip
with your cherry lips, hands on hips
Virginia slim dangling carelessly
you got your black Camaro
a heart of ice, chilling me
cupid's broken arrow
you keep on your nightstand
I never could understand you

Now these spiderweb blinds are opening
now that I am your insignificant other
I just sit around playing the fool, moping, hoping
I just sit around playing Atari with my brother
counting my change for a bus ride
to your door
I sleep on the floor
it isn't clean

What can I say, when I think of you
with your sorceress ways, you know who'll
play the jester, stay behind your throne
you, with your cheerleader legs
a heart of another, not your own
to you he worships and begs
you keep him sinking in quicksand
I never could undestand

The want ads want me
a sad way to make you jealous
I sit alone at 4 a.m., under your tree
shaking the raindrops to the dust
thinking about thinking of you
what's new
what's he to you
it isn't my business

What can I say, when it's time
for me to find a new rhyme
and reason to get some sleep
I just dream of you dreaming me dead
I scratch at my skin, trying to reap
the benefits of a king-sized bed
and a restraining order
I never could find a quarter
to call you
am I understanding you correctly
an apartment for rent
or can I sleep on your lawn
in a little yellow tent
hey, what can I say
at least I'm devoted to you

i like the way the rhyme trips around in this...
much enjoyed the method and its madness
