Moved from a shack to a barn

“We have readings!”
he would say, from time to time
brandishing a small thin volume
of A.R. Ammons, Billy Collins
or the writing of some other
lesser known poet

“We have readings!”
he would announce when he came to work
And if there was a lull in the dinner rush
or, if we had carved out some dick-off time
he would read them aloud
until we were interrupted
by the insistent yammering of the waitstaff

“We have readings!”
I would remind him
When the last dinner check had been spindled
and we could again, continue to marvel
at what other men had written
At the thoughts they were able to convey
or rather, at the manner of the conveyance

On the best of nights, the slowest nights
we’ll have consumed an entire book
and I can crawl from the heat and sweat
full, in the knowledge
that the universe remakes itself in my dreams
Clouds are living creatures, grazing on sky
And the smoke from a cigarette is an ephemeral grey beanstalk

I always feel a little guilty when copying just a part of an outstanding poem, but I wanted you to know, especially how filling your last stanza is to this reader!

Yes.

I still have a copy of an old Flying Pickets tape and you make me to want to play it.

I didn't copy a thing  LOL (though sometimes I'm tempted)...I just like the place where poets put me sometimes.

Thanks miscellanea

Gawd I love you Ed.

You don't know how many times I wanted to morph myself into that kitchen with you all...

I'm jealous actually, even knowing how damned hot a kitchen gets, even without discussion.

Someday, this will go on...in MY kitchen!

love ya yeti

Hmm and how I would love to be at work with you again... Amazing Brother Ed.

I'm keeping it.

Ed

I can picture this happening and think how wonderful in something so dreary, to have the light of those old poets words and someone else who shared them.  Loved this slice of your life...at least I'm assuming it was real.  Thanks for sharing.

volumes...speaking volumes...

"how can you sit at a machine all night...
when you are in front of it all day?..."

because I make the keys click for me
while the crickets chirp; snow falls; grass grows; birds sing...leaves fall...

yea...

for all of the blue that shines back at me,
I should probably were a PiP on my forehead.

from Ammons, 'Gravelly Run'

quote:

holly grows on the banks in the woods there,
and the cedars' gothic-clustered
spires could make
green religion in winter bones:

so I look and reflect, but the air's glass
jail seals each thing in its entity

smiling here at you, dear Ed

yes....

if we must destroy our minds with
grill-smoke

then we can rebuild them....
with words from our wordbrothers and sisters

I always enjoy it Ed...

I agree with Karen, what the both of you share is beauty, hardly found and honored.  Did I mention I need a job?
I used to be a line cook, ya know?  *smile*

I can only fathom the conversations swirling with that smoke . . .
