The first time that I heard your voice I must admit, you weren’t my choice. Your nasal tones were not my style, But as I listened for a while Your lyrics captivated me And I stayed tuned for your stories. From “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” To LeRoy Brown – remember him? The operator kept the dime, You looked for ways to bottle time, And when things started to go wrong You said “I love you” in a song. With workin’ at the car wash blues You made a point and still amused. Still, I preferred your songs of loss. I recognized that lover’s cross - If only hopes could be appeased With photographs and memories. When you were robbed of growing old Many stories were left untold For you lived far too short a life. Your baby son and loving wife Were not alone in missing you – I admired you then… and still do. In memory of Jim Croce, 1/10/43-9/20/73 |

He is one of my favorites just for the same reasons! A friend of mine told me he had once met Jim while walking the streets of a college town. (The dead giveaway was the guitar strapped to his back!) My friend stopped and asked him the proverbial question, "Are you Jim Croce?" Jim sat his guitar down and the two talked for a half and hour or so! My friend said he appeared as common as they come, but we know differently don't we! A keeper Jim is and so is this! miscellanea |

Ruth, I wish I could say this brought back memories, I never really knew him...I guess because I was too wrapped up in being a warrior, sailing the seas beneath the blue. On the other hand, Orbison was very big on my list....particularly "Pretty Woman", one of my favorites...1973 was a very long time ago...I was three quarters shy of a dollar then....young, dumb and full of vinegar and not very much spice.... |

These Dreams. *S* But yes... he was real... and I think that's one of the reasons his music is still fresh to us today. *S* Thank you! *S* Pilgrimage: In retrospect, some of his songs seem precognitive... as if he knew his time was short.
