Porch Saga

The old green carpet, indoor out
Had made me sad and made me pout.
Its ratty look was wearing thin
And so I thought I’d take it in.

Before I paint the porch anew,
I’ll fix that stud that looks askew.
And have it looking sharp and bright.
(I always want to do things right.)

But wait, it’s soft down here below
Behind the cobwebs, don’t you know?
I’d better fix this other board
Or else it’ll seem like it’s been gored.

This joist is sagging just a bit,
I’ll take a sledge and whack at it.
Can’t reach the joist, I’ll take some floor.
It’s not free yet, I’ll take off more.

This two by four has dry rot too.
Perhaps I can stuff in some glue?
Who built this porch that sags with rot?
I’d say to him, “What hath you wrought?”

It’s good that post supports those beams
Oops, water stains show weakened seams.
There’s not a part of all this wood
will last beyond this summer’s good.

You laugh, homeowner, sitting smug.
I only thought I’d change the rug.
Alas, the task came down to be
A rebuilt porch for you and me!

Isn't that just the way it goes?
Tackle a job that you'd suppose
would go as good and easy as pie,
and SMACK - problems, right in the eye!

"It's a simple little job, you see,"
the bank account will let us see
right through this simple project to do...
we've the time, and we've the tools!

Until the "under cover work" begins,
nothing like a kick in the shins!
One small project will claim me, true...
Where's Tim the Toolman for me and you???

*chuckling*

Been there....done that!

Oh boy do I know where you are coming from Ken!!
It starts out with what you think is going to be a small quick job
next think you know, you've almost rebuilt the entire house...
and to top it all off...it's on-going!!!
Excellent write...thanks for the smiles!
It's nice to see we're in the same boat.

You've been up against it too?
This summer I'm a one-man crew!
Wore out my hammer, pounding nails,
Wore out my wits with small details.
Now the house is done, but gee,
Will someone please remodel ME?

Sagging porches
sometimes need torches;
to set things right
sometimes requires
more than flashlight.

everyone who has ever tackled a home repair job will relate to this, Ken

LOL, and today, I started dusting some shelves, and now the bedroom is topsy turvy 'cuz I decided to rearrange the furniture.

Thanks to each of you for dropping by.  For anyone who has ever started a little project, it is a truth of life that there are no "little projects."

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

Here you thought a coat of paint was all it was going to take.  NOT!

Thanks for sharing your fun and frustration, kayjay~

This was such a delightful read!

I'm re-reading this, as it just mght make me think twice about repairing that falling down step outside...on something I rent, not own. Guess I should mention, I had to rebuild a set of steps on a house in Alaska, built on stilts in permafrost.  (I was 'caretaker' on the property HAHAH) and will never ever ever forget the..."experience." The rise and fall of the ground was about 5-6" up and down and back again up again 2x year. Needless to say, I was in way over my head, which tops out at 5'3"   It was NOT a pretty sight to see me tackling those 4x4s, not to mention how I handled the saw and hammer. LOL

Sure do understand this one, Ken....enjoy reading about it, but not doing it myself.
