Soon the trees will liberate
Their leaves
From strong-arm holds
Of stalk and limb,
Wrenched free from branch and twig
To fall and dip, and twist;
Broken from their grips.

Loosened thus by time
And frost, bright colors
Cart away in cold,
And wheel-less cars;
Driven by October wind
Towards graves
As living things, all must.
*
Then comes, as does
The day of seems-like-doom,
The world is hushed
Of green-leaf song,
Except for sounds of scratch
And brush of brown,
On crinkled brown (falling)
From oak and beech; comrades these,
Now dressed in dulls
Sing out in martial harmony,
Of dead and dry, resounding flats
Where summer sharps where found...
*
Conducted by a winter wind,
Out of living tune; a soldier band
Plays lost-war music sounds;
In high, November symphonies.

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
Longfellow

In this, the orchestra of bare limbs,
conducting winter's song...the imagery,
though bare, still holds a portend of
promise/fact...that all times have a season,
and this is music to remember.

Wonderful, yet melancholy feelings here Ford to go with the changing of the seasons.
And, for some reason here in Ontario
this year the leaves are already beginning to change.
I do love Autumn..but what happened to Summer?
This has to be my favourite from you as of now..
a keeper for sure!
Hugs~

I love the words, the feel- you capture the essence of fall and make it breathe- much enjoyed.

The images were incredible and guess what I saw?  Remember the Disney film Fantasia?  I saw the wind leading that orchestra of yours and it was quite the show.

I hear the music, Ford.  Quite a symphony!  I always get homesick when autumn comes around and your descriptions of the leaves changing really brought the memories flooding.   ........jo

Ford,

This was a beautiful poem with several different layers and messages played out under the guise of changing seasons.

It reminds me of one that I just reposted for Larry called, "This Bitter Wind".  I hope you will take the time to read and appreciate it.  I believe we both understand each other in this regard in sort of a unique metaphorical way.  It's amazing sometimes how such processes we take for granted every day (or every season) make such profound statements for those who take the time to appreciate symbolisms (poets).  I find your poem to be superb, and so visually engaging that I read it several times taking in the scenery.  This is a keeper for sure.  You have written a masterpiece, my friend.

My Goodness, such wonderful replies.....

We have had the warmest days of the summer in the last week, seems there has been a lag in what is normal, if normal does exist in nature?....But the days are shorter and less sunlight is what changes sugar to starch, that colors the leaves in autumn.....certainly thsese warm replies are like these sunny day....and certainly they sweeten my soul...

Thank you all for the beautiful comments.....they mean a lot to me...

they are just about ready to pour thru the ink on my pen these days, and i wonder often if it is harder on the tree or the little ones that play at her feet and both fear and
embrace the wind that takes them from her.

Thank you for reading, Autumn is approaching on a fast moving train...The clouds coming over the hill this morning are flying...bringing a different scent on cold air...an autumn scent
