I remember learning of an18th century mathematician
A man renowned for his work in Algebra
Whose name has escaped me as easily as his theories
An occurrence that surprises me less than it once would have
Who enjoyed, as a snack, grilled mice on toast

And though there was no mention
Of exactly how this delicacy was prepared
I can be fairly certain
That no one de-bones a mouse before grilling
One can only hope that it was at least gutted and skinned

So, I now envision this man of numbers in his ill-lit study
Behind a paper littered desk of simple construction
His pale hands trying to smooth the fatigue from his eyes
When his goodwife or handmaid enters bearing a small tray
Of these most odd Hors D’oeuvres

And I envy him, his snack

Your face in your photo goes very well with this poem Ed.  We all need, but some of us are luckier than others in life and love.  Wonderful work as only you would do.

Now off I go to find out what idiot would eat grilled mice, that is truly disguisting.

Wow, you are an awesome poet.  The story was simple and you worded it simply.  But the flow was beyond smooth.  Its like when reading the words just flow into your head.  Like a stream.

And about the eatting of mice.  I might try it if it was offered.  Who knows it could be the best thing ever served.  lol.

From this standpoint, my good sir:

If you never dined
on the frames of mice,
brought to you by silver platter
from a well manicured hand
scented with plumeria
and hints of lavender,
passioned in the dark of night;

You would still be sitting
right there,
parchment crumpled about you,
musings inked, barely drying.

Leaving the lot of us
wondering exactly what it is
you have consumed -
to cause the rest of us
to still be so hungry.

*grin*

you ARE brainfood Ed . . .

OK, It would seem that the mans' name is William Buckland...And wasn't a mathematician at all...but an early archeologist...Sheesh, brain food! (gotta get me some!)

Sheesh!  After two hours of having to wade through more facts than I possibly ever wanted to know about 18th century mathematicians, now you tell us?  LOL, Sue is right you are indeed, "brain food!"  I am going to bed now darn full!  Okay I knew the poem was really not at all about the mouse honest

Of course, now I want to know
was the hors d’oeuvre on
toast points or a simple cracker?

This reminded me of a particular movie,
it reminded me of one's obsession...
and it reminded me
not to eat breakfast this morning.

Wranx, you never cease to amaze me with your writing.  Yes, Mark Twain, I think.  Hey, when we lived in Indonesia, we visited a Padong restaurant once.  That's a place where they bring a whole tray full of food to your table and you just try a little of everything.  Never, I mean, never ask what things are, though.  The monkey brain is delicious, by the way.  Although after finding out what it was, it did not sit very well.  lol .... And now you know what is wrong with me....monkey brain!  Have a great day.   ....jo
